The Amazon River is the world's largest river in of water volume and size
of its drainage basin. The Amazon originates in the Peruvian Andes Mountains and
flows through Brazil. Many visitors to Lima enjoy taking an excursion to the
upper Amazon where they can experience the river's vast biodiversity.
The Amazon River is home to about one fifth of the world's species of
birds. Some experts believe that one square kilometer of the Amazon can contain
as many as 75,000
types of trees and 150,000 species of higher plants.
